Two sewage works costing $743m to be built in capital

Two sewage works costing $743m to be built in capital HA NOI — Two waste water treatment plants, the largest of their kind for Ha Noi, will be built to improve the capital’s hygiene and environment.

The first large-scale factory, Yen Xa factory, 13 ha in area and with a total investment of 36.145 billion Japanese yen (US$357 million), will be located in the capital’s outlying Thanh Tri District, according to Pham Van Cuong, director of the Ha Noi Drainage Project Management Board on Thursday.

The other, Phu Do factory, 6 ha in area and with an investment of 39.152 billion yen ($386 million), will be built in the suburban district of Tu Liem, he said.

The two factories will start construction — in two phases — in April 2012 and should be operational in 2017, according to the tenderer Nippon Koei-Viwase.

When its first phase is complete, Yen Xa factory is expected to hold a treatment capacity of 135,000 cubic metre a day. The factory’s capacity will be doubled when the second phase is complete.

The factory, when fully operational, will be able to treat waste water discharged in five districts of Hoan Kiem, Ba Dinh, Dong Da, Thanh Xuan and Thanh Tri.

Meanwhile Phu Do factory is expected to deal with a daily waste water treatment capacity of 21,000 cubic metre in its first phase. The capacity will be increased to three or four times higher once it completes its second phase.

When fully operational, Phu Do factory will be able to treat waste water in all districts of Cau Giay, Tu Liem and part of Thanh Xuan District.

Ha Noi Drainage Company director general Nguyen Le says 450,000-510,000 cubic metre of waste water is presently discharged daily in the city. More than 90 per cent of it is directly poured into the drainage system without being treated.

This includes waste water discharged from industrial zones, hospitals and factories, he says.

Only 5 to 7 per cent of waste water goes through any standard treatment procedures. The city currently has one big waste water treatment factory, North Thang Long-Van Tri, and two small treatment stations, Kim Lien and Truc Bach.

This has led to the alarming rise in pollution of the capital’s rivers and canals, says Le.

"Water of the city’s drainage rivers and canals is usually black in colour and gives off putrid smells, which affects human health and the environment," he says.
